Oh, no! Not a Subpoena! When the dreaded day comes that you’re involved in a legal dispute – that’s the day your credentials will come into question. It’ll also be the day when more credible credentials will prevail over lesser credentials. Our industry recognizes the basic differences between vocational and professional certifications. The vocational certifications are for limited training – they are for those entering the industry. Professional certifications are those awarded to individuals who have established themselves in the industry – they are for those who have field experience. Obviously, the most desirable of all industry credentials are the professional certification programs overseen by a third party such as the Council for Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) and the National Commission for Certifying Bodies (NCCA). In summary, vocational certifications indicate training; professional certifications indicate field experience, and the professional certifications governed by the rules of CESB and/or NCCA are the ones that best withstand the scrutiny that comes with the dreaded subpoena.
